„Buzludzha was on my bucket list…”

„Buzludzha was on my bucket list…”

Two years ago I read an article about abandoned communist monuments around Europe, and the most imressive one was Bulzludzha, in the middle of Bulgaria. It ended up on my bucket list immediately, altough I didn’t have an idea how I will get there. Why would I travel to the middle of Bulgaria, you know. Then I didn’t know, I’m going to spend 7 months in Tryavna on EVS, and the monument is only 18 kilometers away from there. Actually, it’s visible from the higher parts, when the sky is clear. So I was very excited about the second weekend of september, because we visited the Buzludza mountain hut for a family and friends weekend, dedicated to arts, creativity and enjoying the nature. We made some felt animals, and painted pottery for our next charity bazaar on the sports day, supporting the family of Ilian Panov. Other EVS volunteers from the mid-term training joined us, and it was also a good opportunity for us, to get to know a bit our new italian volunteers, Giada and Fabio. We hiked to the monument two times, because we wanted to see it at sunrise and sunset. The atmosphere of this building was incredible, yet it’s very sad to see it’s getting more and more destroyed by the elements. If time travel was available, I would definiately visit this place, when it was new. But still, it was a great experience.
